MHI Hail 101

What does hail damage look like?

Hail damage is a dark spot on a roofing shingle where the granules have been knocked off. The asphalt underlayment may be revealed. Typically the dark spots are about the size of a quarter.

How do I know if my roof has hail damage?

It is usually impossible to know without checking the roof for damage. This involves inspecting the entire surface for any damage. If you have had hail or wind damage in your area, you will want to have your roof inspected right away. Unknown and untreated hail damage very often leads to bigger problems down the road.

What should I do if I have had hail or wind damage in my area?

Call METRO Home Improvement, Inc. and request a free hail damage inspection/assessment. Upon confirmation of damage, you will be able to file a "No Fault" claim with your insurance company. We will guide you through the insurance claim process, meet with your claims adjuster, and work with your insurance company to generate a "Scope of Loss" claim to restore your property.

Can my roof be repaired?

In some cases it can be repaired. To make that determination, the roof will be inspected both on the outside and inside to determine the extent of any damage. We will look for warning signs, such as stains on ceilings or walls, peeling paint, and missing shingles. We will also take into consideration the age of the roof. If the roof is within its lifespan and you are not seeing any other warning signs, then simply repairing or replacing the shingles should fix the problem.

How much will it cost to replace my roof?

There are many factors that go into calculating the cost of replacing a roof. These factors include the square footage, linear footage of starters, waste, pitch, slopes, accessibility, type of shingles used, height from the ground, removal layers of old roof, and labor. Please call today for a free estimate from one of our roofing professionals.

How long will it take to replace my roof?

Usually we can finish your roof in one day. However, this may vary based on the size of the roof and any inclement weather. Careful planning and managing by the roofing contractor also plays a vital role in how long a job will take. At METRO Home Improvement, Inc. you can be assured that all work will be completed as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality or workmanship in the process. Can the Insurance Company Tell Me What Restoration Company To Use?

It is against the law for your insurance company to stipulate what company you can or can't use to conduct the repairs to your home. Sometimes insurance companies will use psychological tactics or threats stating that they can't guarantee that your loss will be covered if you do not use their recommended company. Their insistence for you using "their recommended company or preferred vendor" will only benefit them, Not you - the consumer. Why? Because the insurance company is strong arming the preferred vendor (contractor) to do what they say or we will not provide you with any further projects.

As a homeowner you always have the final say in selecting the company of your choice-assuming that your loss is covered by your policy and the charges are invoiced by your restoration company are "ordinary" and "customary". You have no need to worry! METRO Home Improvement Hail storm Specialists is recognized by all major insurance companies and uses acceptable Invoicing practices recognized by all insurance providers.

How to Check if There's Hail Damage to Your Roof:

After a storm, it can be tempting to get out a ladder and climb on to the roof to check if there's hail damage, but there are several ways you can check for the possibility of damage that are much safer. Once the storm has passed and it's safe to go outside, a good way to begin determining if there's roof damage is to measure the hail that's still on the ground. Typically, hail that's 1 ¼ inches (The size of a Quarter) or larger can cause damage to a roof. Then look around to see if anything has been damaged by the hail, such as siding or patio furniture. Other items will more than likely be damaged before the roof of your home. Also keep your eyes open for any roof pieces that may be on the ground. This could range from shingle granules to large pieces of shingles. Doing this is an especially great way to check for roof damage if you were not at home when the storm hit.

If you see either of these signs, then you can pull out the ladder to check the roof. You can stay on the ladder and just take a peek to check the roof in most situations. Hail will leave an obvious pattern of differently size of black marks (craters), the pattern will look random. Hopefully there won't be damage, but if there is it's time to call your roofing contractor of choice-METRO Home Improvement.
